Influence of an active T-foil on motions and passenger comfort of a large high-speed wave-piercing catamaran based on sea trials

Abstract T-foil and stern tabs were installed on a wave-piercing catamaran (Incat Tasmania Hull 061) to improve ship motions passenger comfort. More than 40 total effective hours of sea trials conducted by the US Navy in 2004, encountering states 4–5 Atlantic Ocean near United Kingdom. In this paper influence ride-control system (RCS) heave pitch response amplitude operator (RAO) full-scale high-speed was investigated using trial data. The reduction motion sickness incidence (MSI) estimated order examine effectiveness RCS improving With existing control algorithm, vertical accelerations found be best controlled active working together with tabs, while RAO mainly mitigated deploying only tabs. About 23% observed peak deployment an T-foil. MSI can reduced up respect cases only, depending encountered wave conditions, based ISO recommendation for calculation 2-h seaway passage.
